Dr. Shepro joined the UAA faculty in 1988, after two years with the North Slope Higher Education Center in Barrow. Prior to that he taught six years at UAF.
Dr. Shepro has also taught at Bellevue Community College in Washington, and at the University of Washington.
Dr. Shepro's specialties are American government and politics, American national institutions, urban politics, Alaska government, and the politics of racial and ethnic minorities.
Dr. Shepro has chaired the Polaris Lecture Committee at UAA, and served on the Native Studies Advisory Committee and the Student Showcase Committee.
In addition, Dr. Shepro has served on the video advisory committee of the Alaska Local Boundary Commission, as a planning consultant to the Fort Yukon area Native Corporation, and as supervisor and principal investigator for the political science internship program at UAF. He cofounded the Consortium for Alaska Municipal Training, which includes the UA system, the Alaska Municipal League, and the Alaska Department of Community and Regional Affairs, and which provides education and internship training to small, primarily rural local governments in Alaska.
Dr. Shepro has concentrated his research and writing on rural Alaska education and government. His most recent publication was a chapter on political parties in Alaska included in Alaska State Government. He is currently writing and doing research on policy issues in the circumpolar North, on the influence of communication patters in local government, and on local participation in resource management in rural Alaska.
