THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Harry S. Truman Scholarships, which honor the thirty-third President of the United States, are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are college juniors this year and will be seniors in the 2010-11 academic year, and who have an outstanding potential for leadership in a future career in public service. Scholarships provide support up to $30,000 for graduate school.
ELIGIBILITY
To be considered for nomination, a student must be:
• a full-time junior student at UAA
• committed to a career in public service
• in the upper quarter of his or her class
• a United States citizen or national
HOW TO APPLY
Colleges and universities nominate students for Truman Scholarships. Professor James W. Muller is the Truman Scholarship Faculty Representative at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Interested students should visit the Truman Scholarship website, http://www.truman.gov, print out the application, complete it carefully, and submit it to the office of the Department of Political Science, with the following attachments:
(1) UAA Truman Scholarship application cover sheet (available from the Department of Political Science office in SSB 367)
(2) a transcript of college grades
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS
TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 2010, AT NOON.
SELECTION
Applicants who have been selected for interviews by the UAA Review Committee, consisting of the Faculty Representative and Truman Scholars residing in Alaska, will be notified by e-mail on Friday, January 9, with interviews to be held on campus on Friday, January 16. Several students may be nominated by UAA to participate in the national competition. Nominees who later receive invitations from the regional panel will be interviewed in March 2010.
